EDRI and JICA: 7th High Level Forum on Industrial Development

The Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Ethiopia Office held their seventh High Level Forum (HLF) of phase II of the policy dialogues on industrial development on 14 January, 2015 at the Simien Salon in Sheraton Addis Hotel.
The forum opened with remarks by Excellencies Mr. Ahmed Abetew, Minister of Industy, Mr. Kazuhiro Suzuki, Japan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Mr. Hiromichi Murakami, Deputy Director General and Group Director for Private Sector Development Division, Industrial Development and Public Policy Department, JICA.
Discussions at the forum focused on the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) II with special emphasis on quality, productivity and competitiveness. More specifically, H.E. Mr. Mekonnen Manyazewal, Commissioner of the National Planning Commission delivered macro perspectives on “Main points of GTP II and its implication system: Productivity and competitiveness” while Mr. Getahun Tadesse, Director General of Ethiopian KAIZEN Institute conveyed details on the same topic focusing on KAIZEN movement.
The second presentation by H.E Dr. Mebrehatu Meles, State Minister, Ministry of Industry focused on “Main points of GTP II and implementation system: Industrial Development Chapter.” Following this, prof. I. Ohno and Prof. K. Ohno, both from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies delivered a presentation on “Industrial Zone Development: key issues from the experiences of Japanese zone developers in Vietnam and Thailand.” Finally, Mr. Katsuro Igari, special advisor, METI and Mr. Toru Homma, Senior Advisor of Private Sector Development to JICA presented their thoughts on “Industrial Zone Development in India and Myanmar.”
The forum was attended by high level officials, researchers, academics and experts from different ministries, such as the Ministry of Industry, National Planning Commission , Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ethiopian Investment Agency, Addis Ababa University, EDRI, GRIPS in Japan and mission members from JICA.
Closing remarks from Excellencies Mr. Mekonnen Manyazewal and Mr. Newai Gebre-ab, the Primier’s Chief Economic Advisor who also chaired the sessions, concluded the forum.
