EDRI launches New Research Program

“Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development in Ethiopia” has been launched on November 10, 2016 at the Capital Hotel. After opening remarks from Dr. Gebrehiwot Ageba, Director of Programs, EDRI and Ato Asfaw Abebe, General Director, Federal Small and Medium Manufacturing Industry Development Agency, Dr. Mulu Gebreeyesus, Senior researcher at EDRI and lead researcher of the project gave a brief description of the program.

EDRI initiated research program titled “Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development in Ethiopia” has been launched on November 10, 2016 at the Capital Hotel and Spa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 

After opening remarks from Dr. Gebrehiwot Ageba, Director of Programs, EDRI and Ato Asfaw Abebe, General Director, Federal Small and Medium Manufacturing Industry Development Agency, Dr. Mulu Gebreeyesus, Senior researcher at EDRI and lead researcher of the project gave a brief description of the program.

The main aim of the project, Dr. Mulu Gebreeyesus explained, is to fill the critical gap in evidence-based knowledge about small business development in Ethiopia through generating baseline data on small businesses in 10 major cities of the country. Dr. Mulu further explained that the importance of the sector in creating employment opportunities and poverty reduction is the drive behind the launch of the program.

Mr. Abebe Ambachew, Associate Researcher, presented the current status of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) while Dr. Girum Abebe and Dr. Berihu Assefa, Associate Researchers at EDRI briefed the research design and the survey instruments respectively.

It has been revealed that more than 10 research papers will be produced in the course of the project and will be used by multiple stakeholders, such as, policy makers and practitioners in the federal and regional governments, NGOs, and entrepreneurs to make evidence-based decisions.

As the purpose of the workshop was to gather insights from stakeholders, each presentation had been accompanied by discussions with participants.

Finally, a consultative meeting was held with participants from the regions in focus.
